Does PetSmart actually donate to charity? ›

We are the leading funder of animal welfare in North America. We have committed $100 Million to help improve veterinary care. Since 1994, we have helped over 10 million pets find loving homes.

This organization is tax-exempt under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.It is eligible to receive contributions deductible as charitable donations for federal income tax purposes.

We work in partnership with our in-store adoption program in all PetSmart® stores across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. PetSmart Charities delivers robust local and national grant funding that: helps more than 2,500 animal welfare organizations matching people with pets through adoption.

Feeding Pets of the Homeless® is the first and one of the few national nonprofits providing pet food and emergency veterinary care to pets that belong to people experiencing homelessness.

For contributions of cash, check, or other monetary gift (regardless of amount), you must maintain a record of the contribution: a bank record or a written communication from the qualified organization containing the name of the organization, the amount, and the date of the contribution.

You may deduct charitable contributions of money or property made to qualified organizations if you itemize your deductions. Generally, you may deduct up to 50 percent of your adjusted gross income, but 20 percent and 30 percent limitations apply in some cases.

Veterinary bills, pet insurance, food, supplies, training, grooming, boarding, and transportation costs are all examples of pet expenses you can write off on taxes. However, you can only claim pets on taxes if they meet certain criteria, such as contributing to income or serving a medical need.

How do I ask for donations without begging? ›

Nonprofit fundraising is an art, and if you want to keep the funds flowing, your words matter. Here's what to say when asking for donations: Be clear, succinct, and authentic. Use “you,” say “thanks,” and be specific. Keep in mind who you're asking and how you're asking.

We're helping improve access to free or affordable pet food by partnering with human service agencies that are open to serving pets, too. These include: Feeding America: We're working together to donate and distribute pet food to human food banks across the country to support those facing pet food insecurity.

At its inception in 1987, PetSmart® made the sound decision to not sell dogs or cats, but to encourage pet adoptions. In 1992, PetSmart began donating space in each store to animal welfare organizations to help place pets in loving homes. These in-store Adoption Centers grew when PetSmart Charities was founded in 1994.
