The first time I made dairy-free chocolate mousse was when I hosted a Bunco night at my house. It was shortly after I began eating dairy-free. I knew I wanted some sort of sweet chocolate dessert that was single serving.

You only need FOUR ingredients to make this vegan chocolate mousse:

  • full-fat coconut milk or coconut cream - this replaces the dairy but adds so much richness. It's such a simple and delicious one-to-one substitution. And, it works perfectly when creating almost any chocolate dessert.
  • cocoa powder - to add that chocolatey goodness. And most cocoa powder is vegan.
  • vanilla extract - for more flavor depth.
  • powdered sugar - this gives the mousse a nice sweetness and helps it from becoming grainy.

✅ Step-by-step directions

Exact measurements of ingredients and instructions are in the printable recipe card toward the bottom of this post. Here are some helpful tips to guide you as you make this recipe.

There's a little bit of prep work in making this, in that you'll want to refrigerate a can of coconut milk overnight. You can also use coconut cream, but I have found that it's easier to find 15-ounce cans of full fat coconut milk.

Coconut cream tends to be sold in 8-ounce cans, and is not as common in general grocery stores across the US.

1. Once you're ready to make the recipe, remove the bowl and the can of coconut milk from the refrigerator. Open the can and skim off only the thick cream into the stand mixing bowl. Reserve the rest for smoothies, soups, and other recipes.

2. Add the cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar to the mixing bowl.

3. Mix all ingredients on medium until whipped into a thicker cream the consistency of mousse.

4. If necessary, add more powdered sugar. Serve!

💡 Optional: Add mini chocolate chips. I love the added crunch and texture that the mini chips bring to this dessert.

👩🏻‍🍳 Recipe FAQs

Is cocoa powder vegan?

Yes! If you purchase the kind that is in the baking aisle, chances are more likely that the cocoa powder you purchased is vegan. It's made by processing the cacaobeans under high heat, and typically does NOT have any animal byproducts added.

How do you fix grainy chocolate mousse?

To help avoid grainy mousse, use powdered sugar. If you already have a grainy mousse, you may be able to fix it by re-melting your mixture, adding a bit more cream, and whisking it again. Too much whisking can separate the cream and start to form a grainy, buttery texture, so be careful not to overdo it.

🍽 How to serve

Dairy Free Chocolate Mousse Recipe | Urban Bliss Life (4)

When I make this just for me and my family, I'll keep it in a big covered bowl in the refrigerator.

For parties, however, I like to serve this dairy-free chocolate mousse in individual shot glasses, small single serving bowls, or even champagne coupe glasses.

The presentation alone is super adorable, but offering single serving desserts alsomake it easy for guests to enjoy and still mix and mingle.

Instructions

  • Chill the can of coconut milk in the refrigerator overnight.

  • For best results, place your stand mixer bowl in the refrigerator for 10-30 minutes before you make the chocolate mousse shots.

  • Once you're ready to make the recipe, remove the bowl and the can of coconut milk from the refrigerator.

  • Open the can and skim off only the thick cream into the stand mixing bowl. Reserve the rest for smoothies, soups, and other recipes.

  • Add the cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar to the mixing bowl.

  • Mix all ingredients on medium until whipped into a thicker cream the consistency of mousse. If necessary, add more powdered sugar.

  • Serve immediately.

  • Optional: top with mini dairy-free chocolate chips.

Notes

Makes between 6-10 servings, depending on how much cream your can of coconut milk yielded. You can easily double this recipe to make more!

Party serving idea: spoon into double shot glasses. Or you could get fancy and pipe the mousse into double shot glasses, as shown in the photos here, into mini dessert bowls, or even champagne coupe glasses.

This chocolate mousse will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days but is best eaten within 1-2 days. I do NOT recommend attempting to freeze vegan chocolate mousse.

I’m new at finding and making dairy free recipes but this one is amazing! My guests did not know that this was vegan - and very low in calories - until I told them. My husband - a chocoholic - was also fooled. Definitely a recipe that I will make again and again!

I make a similar dessert with white chocolate. I wonder if the coconut milk would change the flavor, which is extremely delicate. I'll definitely give this a try.

chocolate chips are should NEVER be optional ;) coconut milk is one of my favorite ways to make rich desserts - have you tried whipping it for whip cream yet? SO GOOD.

I used to have dinner parties in college, and made these kind of mousse desserts... so simple yet so impressive, and tasty!

FAQs

Why is my chocolate mousse not fluffy? ›

Not fluffy enough, not chocolatey enough, too sweet, grainy, etc etc. Many “easy” chocolate mousse recipes tend to use too much cream so the end result is more like custard, rather than aerated like real chocolate mousse should be.

Why is my vegan chocolate mousse grainy? ›

Check that the chocolate has cooled down sufficiently – it should not be warm to the touch or else chocolate is likely to seize and you will end up with grainy mousse. Gently and gradually fold a portion (approx. a third) of melted chocolate into whipped aquafaba – using a silicone spatula and a gentle folding motion.

When making a chocolate mousse Why does melted chocolate need to be warm when the whipped eggs or cream are added? ›

The melted chocolate should not be hot because the eggs will curdle when added. Nor should it be cold because the eggs won't incorporate smoothly. Make sure the melted chocolate is at body temperature.

Does chocolate mousse contain butter? ›

While it uses only a few ingredients, chocolate, eggs, butter, vanilla, and heavy cream, its chocolate flavor is rich and its texture is silky smooth and airy, almost foamy. And foamy is an apt description as "mousse" is French for 'froth' or 'foam'.

What are common mistakes when making mousse? ›

You'll have a better chance for success if you can learn to avoid these common mousse mistakes.
  • Getting the temperatures wrong. ...
  • Using a bowl that's not squeaky clean. ...
  • Overmixing your mousse batter. ...
  • Burning the chocolate. ...
  • Flubbing the folding. ...
  • Not straining the custard. ...
  • Skipping the chill.

How do you make chocolate creamier when melting? ›

smooth and creamy melted chocolate every time. for every one cup of chocolate chips, I either use half a teaspoon of vegetable oil. or one tablespoon of coconut oil. microwave in 22nd intervals. stir very well between so that it doesn't burn.

Why put egg yolks in mousse? ›

The pate a bombe serves as the main body of our mousse; the proteins in the egg yolks are strong enough to hold all the air bubbles we'll incorporate, even after being mixed with melted chocolate and whipped cream. It's rich, velvety, and makes the best chocolate mousse in this chef's opinion.

Is it safe to use raw eggs in chocolate mousse? ›

Of course, using raw eggs is a big no-no for me, so I always stick to the pâte à bombe, which is just a mixture of pasteurized egg yolks with hot sugar: this way all the bacteria in the raw eggs are killed and the mousse is perfectly safe to eat! (And the final result is also much more stable and with a great texture!)

What can I use instead of cocoa powder in mousse? ›

Carob powder is often used as a cocoa substitute in baked and no-bake goods such as cake, brownies, cookies, fudge, and mousse. Because of its sweet and mild flavor, it is also great in recipes that don't require much sugar, such as pancakes, oatmeal, and ice cream shakes.

Why is my chocolate mousse so dense? ›

Chocolate with more cocoa butter in it will render the chocolate mousse heavy and thick. How to choose the right fluidity? Too much fat in the recipe creates a texture that is too thick and heavy. Cream with a 35% fat content in combination with a three-drop chocolate yields the perfect texture.

How do you make your hair fluffy with mousse? ›

"Try using [a mousse] on damp hair before you blow-dry, spraying at the root for extra lift," says Grenia. "It's super easy to use, so you can control the amount of power from the product." Dispense a golf ball-sized amount of product into your hand. Apply in sections, starting at the nape of the neck and working down.

What should the texture of mousse be? ›

If the whipping is overdone, the cream's texture becomes denser and loses its volume. This isn't advisable for a mousse. The ideal texture is stiff peaks.

How to fix over whipped chocolate mousse? ›

Fix overwhipped cream by slowly drizzling in liquid cream with the mixer running. You may need to add up to 50% of the original amount of cream to the overwhipped batch before it comes together. Make homemade butter if your mixture goes too far.
