Are you feeling the pressure of the holidays?
My friend Michelle McVittie, author of "I Quit! Oh wait, I'm the mom" has a few words for you that might help you let go and have a little fun. Here's what she has to say:
Take a break from the rules and have some fun!
Life as a child is full of fun, whimsy and silliness. As adults we tend to be too serious and ridged with the rules. I challenge you to let that go for a day for, an hour or at least one meal! Why not have some fun with a holiday breakfast? Do you remember what it was like to be a child?
We should be taking our children’s ability to have fun and relax as a constant reminder that life is meant to be lived. Meal time is a great place to reconnect with your family. I like to play the high and low game. Everyone shares one good thing and one bad thing that happened that day. It opens up conversation and gives each family member an opportunity to share how one bad thing in the day didn’t take away from the good things that happened.
I created holiday place cards to open up conversation, laugh and be silly as child again. Make up elf names or keep the names the same, it’s up to you. Fill in funny facts on the back of the cards to make it more interesting. Ask questions, be creative. Use this with adults or children or both, get everyone involved. Have a happy holiday season. Collect moments, not things. This is the stuff that your children will remember, not what gift they got. -Michelle McVittie
