If you’re heading to an all inclusive resort and worried about what you should pack or what can be left at home, stop stressing! As a professional travel advisor, I have helped many people prepare for their all inclusive vacations. Personally, I have also traveled to several different all inclusive resorts. I have picked up many packing tips and tricks through the years that have helped improve my all inclusive resort vacation. From resorts all over the Yucatan Peninsula to the Caribbean, this packing list will help you no matter your destination. Use this post as your all inclusive packing list, to ensure you pack everything you’ll need for your trip.

Clothing to Pack for Your All Inclusive Vacation

It can be overwhelming thinking about the different types of clothing to pack for a trip to a tropical resort, especially if you’re taking the whole family. This list will give you a better understanding of what to take and what you can leave at home. Before you start packing, make sure you check the dress code for your individual resort. Pay close attention to each restaurant, as some will require nicer clothing for dinner. If you are traveling to an all inclusive resort for a special event, or wedding, make sure to get the dress code, as it may require an outfit that is dressier than what you’d typically wear.

Tops

It’s a great idea to pack a variety of tops in lightweight and breathable fabrics. Pack 2-3 casual tops and 2-3 dressier tops. Many resorts require men and boys to wear sleeves inside all of the restaurants, even the more casual ones.

Pants

You can leave the jeans at home, but I recommend taking at least one pair of linen or cotton pants that can be worn in the evenings at the resort. If you prefer to wear long pants to dinner in the evenings, I suggest packing a few different pairs that you can wear different tops with.

Skirts

Skirts are extremely versatile and can be worn for more casual occasions like taking a painting or tequila-tasting class during the day. They can also be dressed up for dinner time. If you are into skirts, consider packing a few different options that can be dressed up or down depending on the activity or event.

Dresses

I am a dress girl and live in them while on vacation at an all inclusive resort. Typically, I’ll pack several different options and I always make sure they are flowy and comfortable. After spending the day indulging in foods and beverages I don’t usually eat, I find that it’s more comfortable to wear something loose fitting. There are so many beautiful options too. Dresses are easy to pack and versatile. You can dress them up or down with the right accessories and take them from day to night.

Lightweight Jacket

Even if you’re traveling during the summer months, it’s still a good idea to take a light jacket or sweater with you. First, you might need it for the plane. Second, the evenings can sometimes be cool, especially if you get too much sun during the day. I find that a little sunburn makes me cold once the sun goes down. Having a lightweight jacket or sweater with you is one of those “take it just in case items” that you be glad you brought if you need it.

Rain Jacket

If you are traveling to a tropical all inclusive resort during the rainy season, it’s a good idea to take a lightweight rain jacket with you. Don’t let the rain spoil your fun family vacation.

Swimwear

It goes without saying, but don’t forget your bathing suit, especially if you’re going to a warm weather or beach destination. Chances are your days will be spent at the pool, the beach, or on a water activity-filled excursion. Nothing is worse than putting on a wet suit that was worn the day before. Take at least 3 different options that way you always have a dry suit to put on.

Cover-up

Don’t forget to pack a few cover ups to wear over your bathing suit. A cute cover up is a great option for when you need something to throw on quickly before heading into a restaurant at lunch. There are many different styles to choose from, one of the best is a pareo wrap. It doubles as a beach cover-up and can be used as a skirt in the evening by adding a beautiful top and some nice accessories.

Rash Guard

If you are fair-skinned and burn easily consider taking a rash guard. They are not just for kids. A rash guard will be especially important if you are planning on doing any snorkeling or visiting any cenotes. Some tour operators do not allow sunscreen because it’s damaging to the ecosystem and a rash guard will protect you from burning.

Athleisure

I like to be comfortable on travel days and always pack at least a few different athleisure pieces. If you are someone who likes to take advantage of the fitness center or any of the free fitness classes offered at the resort, you’ll want to have a good option or two on hand.

Pajamas

Sleepwear is the one thing I often forget to pack. I’ve learned to pack it first, so I don’t leave it at home. I recommend taking a couple of options. If you’re traveling for a romantic getaway, or honeymoon, make sure to pack a few romantic options.

Underwear, Socks, and Bras

Make sure to pack plenty of pairs of underwear. It’s light and doesn’t take up too much space, so it’s a good idea to pack a bit more than you think you will actually need.

It’s a good idea to check your itinerary for the types of activities and excursions you’re going to be doing. If you plan on hiking or working out, you will need to pack a few pairs of comfortable socks.

Don’t forget to pack 2-3 bras. You might need a strapless bra and/or a sports bra too. I always like to lay out the outfits I’m taking to see what undergarments work best. This way I always have what I need.

The Ultimate Packing List: Shoes to Pack for an All Inclusive Trip

It’s highly likely that most of your time will be spent wearing sandals or flip flops, but there are other types of shoes that you might need. Check out the list below to help you pack.

Flip Flops

Pack a couple of different pairs of flip flops to wear to beach or pool. They also are great if you plan on spending time at the spa.

Casual Sandals

Casual sandals like Reef or Birkenstock are great options for daytime activities. They are comfortable enough to wear while walking around Avenida Quinta in Playa del Carmen or exploring Chichen Itza.

Dress Sandals

It’s also a good idea to take at least one pair of dressy sandals that you can wear in the evening. There is no need to pack high heels, a pair of nice sandals will work perfectly. Unless you have a wedding or special event you’re attending as a part of your trip, you might want to pack a pair of heels.

Tennis Shoes

If you plan on working out, hiking or doing any long walks on your vacation, you might want to pack a pair of tennis shoes. To save room in your suitcase, wear them on travel days. It’ll give you more space and lighten the load!

Dress Shoes

Men might want to take a pair of dress shoes to wear in the evenings. Remember to check the dress code for each restaurant at the resort, and pack accordingly. If you do end up packing dress shoes, don’t forget to pack socks if you need them.

Water Shoes

If you plan on doing any water activities, like snorkeling in the cenotes, you will want to take water shoes with you. Your excursion might include walking through the jungle, and it’s not fun to do this barefoot or in flip flops. Unfortunately, I learned that the hard way.

Must Pack Accessories for an All Inclusive Vacation

When thinking about the accessories you’ll need to pack for your vacation, it’s best to keep it as simple as possible. There is no need to pack a bunch of stuff that you won’t wear or need. The following are accessories that should be added to your all inclusive packing list.

Sun Hats

A sun hat is must-pack item for any resort vacation. It is an essential piece in your sun protection kit. A wide brimmed hat is perfect for keeping the sun off your face.

Beach Bag

A beach bag is absolutely essential for resort vacations. You will need something to carry your sunscreen, electronic devices, sunglasses, and any other items you need for the day. The great part is, it can double as a personal item/purse when flying. So there is no need to try to fit it in a checked bag or carry-on.

Some resorts provide beach bags for their guests. If you are going to an all-inclusive resort that provides them for you, then no need to pack one.

Sunglasses

Another essential for any beach vacation is a couple of pairs of sunglasses. Your eyes will also need protection from the UV rays.

Jewelry

I like to pack a few jewelry pieces to take with me on any vacation. Keep it minimal though, packing too much will add unnecessary weight to your suitcase. Also, do not take your best or most expensive jewelry. Take cheaper items that you wouldn’t be too upset over if they were accidentally lost.

Essential Items and Toiletries to Pack for Your Vacation

It’s highly likely that the resort will provide items like shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. If you are particular about the product you use pack your own travel size versions or use these silicone travel bottles.

If you forget to bring any toiletry items, there should be a gift shop on the resort where you can purchase these items at an extra cost. Use the packing list below to help you as you pack, and you shouldn’t forget a thing.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Many sunscreens on the markets are packed full of chemicals that damage the coral reefs. Many tours in the Riviera Maya require reef-safe sunscreen to protect the local ecosystems. So, make sure to pack plenty of reef-safe sunscreen.

Aloe Vera Gel

Don’t forget to pack a small bottle of aloe vera gel. If you get too much sun, you will want to have it available to soothe your skin. Pro-tip: when you arrive at the resort, store it in the mini fridge. A cool layer will feel heavenly on sunburned skin.

Dry Shampoo

The weather in Mexico and other tropical destinations can be very hot and humid. And rather than washing your hair every day, use a little dry shampoo to help keep your hair fresh for longer. No one wants to spend valuable vacation time washing and drying their hair multiple times a day! Dry shampoo will be a huge time saver.

Lip Balm

Just as you will be applying sunscreen to your face and body, you also need to be applying it to your lips. Your lips can get sunburned too! Don’t forget to take a SPF lip balm to help keep your peckers from getting burnt.

Bug Spray

Mosquitos and other bugs thrive in a tropical environment and more than likely you won’t want to wear long sleeves and long pants to the pools and beach for protection. So don’t forget to pack a DEET-based bug repellent.

First Aid Kit

A first aid kit is a must-have for all travelers. Technology is an important part of our lives and going on vacation doesn’t change that. Hopefully, you get to unplug and relax on your all inclusive vacation, but you will still want to pack the essentials. The following are the tech items that should be on your all inclusive packing list.

Portable Charger

Keeping the phone charged is so important when traveling in an unfamiliar place. We use our phones for everything- from maps to provide us with directions or looking up the best restaurants nearby and communicating with loved ones. Gift your frequent flier a portable charger to ensure they always have a full charge.

E-Reader

I love to read when I am relaxing by the pool or the beach, and taking a bunch of books will weigh down your suitcase. Save room in your luggage and get a lightweight and waterproof e-reader. You’ll be able to have countless books at your disposal.

Tech Organizer

We all have so many electronic devices, and each device has a specific charging cord. Those who travel often understand the struggle when they find all the cords tangled up into one giant mess. A tech organizer helps keep everything nice and tidy and would be a great gift for any traveling techie. They make it so much easier to access everything and are great space savers too. I am not really a souvenir sorta gal. To me, the perfect souvenir is a beautiful photo taken in destination that I can display in a beautiful frame at home. If you’re like me, and having high-quality photos is very important, then don’t forget to pack your camera.

All Inlclusive Packing List: The Essentials

There are certain items that are essential for every type of trip, even an all inclusive resort vacation. Some of the items below are more commonly known travel essentials, while others aren’t thought of as frequently, but still very important.

Reusable Water Bottle

It is so important to stay hydrated during your vacation. Many resorts have eliminated use of plastic bottled water, so make sure to bring your own. The resort will provide filtered water in the restaurants and bars. Do not drink the water right from the tap in your room, having a bottle with a built-in filter is key.

Towel Clips

Iused to struggle with keeping my towel situated on the beach chair. It would slip down when I was sitting on it or blow off in the wind. While it was probably good for me to chase it down the beach a few times a day, it was a bit annoying. And who wants to be annoyed at the beach? No one. I remember seeing a couple using them at a resort and immediately jumped on Amazon.

Problems solved! There are TONS of different fun options to choose from. Everything from a simple design to some with a bit more personality.

Laundry Bag

You will accumulate dirty clothes during your trip, it’s inevitable. Taking a laundry bag that is smell proof will help keep the dirty clothes separated from the clean unworn items.

Debit and Credit Card

Even though you are staying at an all inclusive resort, where everything is included and paid for up front, you will still want to take a credit or debit card with you. First off, you might need it for the days you are traveling and at the airport. Secondly, at check in you will have to put a card on file. You won’t necessarily need it after check in, so make sure to keep in the safe in the hotel room.

Travel Documents

It is so important to take copies of your travel documents with you. Make sure to have copies of all important documents for your trip- insurance, transfers, resort confirmation, and tours/activities. Do not forget to make copies of all passports as well. I also always recommend giving copies to a trusted friend of family member back home.

Travel Insurance

Do not skimp on travel insurance. Most people are unaware that the health insurance they have at home, will not cover them outside of the United States. Protect yourself by enrolling in travel insurance. It is fairly inexpensive and will save you thousands if you need to use it. It is the most important thing you will need for your trip. Don’t forget to take a copy of the policy with you, as well as the carrier’s contact information.

Carbon Monoxide Detector

Unfortunately, there have been accidental deaths that have occurred in some resorts. Some of the untimely deaths were from undetected carbon monoxide leaks. This can happen anywhere. Make sure to protect yourself and your loved ones when you travel and take a portable carbon monoxide detector with you.

Travel Adapter

If you are traveling to Mexico or the Caribbean from North America, you will not need a travel adapter. But if you are traveling from outside the US or Canada, you will need a travel adapter to use your electronic devices.

Portable Luggage Scale

Even though I’m not a souvenir person, I still manage to come home from vacation with a heavier suitcase than when I left. If you’re like me and run the risk of having a suitcase that will be deemed overweight, make sure to take a portable luggage scale with you. This will help you avoid having to rearrange everything at the airport.

Portable Safe

There will be a safe in the hotel room where you can store valuables, documents, and other belongings during your stay. However, you might need to take things like your credit cards or phone with you on excursions or to the pool or beach. Having a portable safe to store them is a great way to ensure their safety while you’re enjoying your vacation.

Apple Air Tags

Apple Air Tags are essential if you are traveling with a lot of luggage. Put an air tag in each bag, and I even put them in my carry-on and personal item. If anything happens, or a bag is lost or stolen, it can be found via the My Location app.

Airplane Phone Holder Mount

A phone holder mount is essential for keep you or the kids entertained, hands-free, on a long flight. This one by Perilogics Universal is great. It holds most size phones and has a 360-degree rotation to give the best viewing angles.

Luggage You Need for an All Inclusive Vacation

I have given you a great list of items that I consider must-pack or essential for your all inclusive vacation, but let’s talk about what you will actually be packing all of this in.

Carry-on Luggage

Even if you are checking a bag, make sure that you have a good size carry on suitcase. An ultra-lightweight, double-spinner is the ideal piece. Keep reading to learn what I recommend you pack in your carry-on.

Wet Bag

More than likely you (or the kiddos) will want to get in as much pool/beach time as possible and you may have wet suits to pack at the end of your trip. Take a wet bag to pack up any wet suits for your trip home. This will help keep the rest of your belongings dry.

Hanging Toiletry Bag

Keep all of your toiletries organized in a compact toiletry bag. I prefer a hanging toiletry bag that way I can keep the countertops clear and pull what I need. This one from Bagsmart doesn’t take up too much space, and it has plenty of room for everything.

Compression Packing Cubes

Compression packing cubes are the must have travel essential. Seriously they are a game changer. First, they keep everything organized vs falling all over your suitcase. Travel Backpack

Make sure to take a travel backpack with you. You will want to have something small and lightweight to take with you if you will be spending a lot of time off the resort for any excursions. As I mentioned above, even if you are checking luggage, make sure to take a carry-on with you. Pack it with essential items you will need in case your checked bag gets lost. It’s also good to have a carry on with you, incase you arrive to your resort before you’re allowed to check in. This way you’ll have easy access to your bathing suit and flip flops and start enjoying the pool and beach. The items below are things I recommend everyone pack in their carry-on bags.
